CARDINAL NOTES

  • Of all Great Lakes Valley Conference foes, the Cardinals have the deepest history with Truman, dating back to the first meeting in 1903. Jewell is 8-16-2 all-time against the Bulldogs but have dropped the last nine.
  • The Cardinals are coming off another tough loss last weekend on the road. Jewell went back and forth with Quincy last weekend as the Hawks took a fourth quarter lead to win 24-20 and win the fourth annual Battle of the Birds.
  • Jewell enters the home stretch as one of the top teams in the league in fourth down conversion defense, ranked second with a clip of just over 37%, which also sits 14th in Division II.
  • Jewell forced two more interceptions last weekend, one each by Sean Mitchell and Javion Macias, to up their season total to 10, second best in the GLVC. For Mitchell, he now has a pick in each of the last two weeks, resulting in 58 yards and a score, to move into second place in the Cardinals' NCAA era with seven career interceptions.
  • In total, the Jewell defense leads the GLVC and is 17th nationally in turnovers gained with 18. The Cardinals have forced at least two turnovers in six different games with four contests of three.
  • AJ Austene has been the top target for the Cardinal quarterbacks this season, coming into the week 11 with a team high 34 receptions for 426 yards and 47.33 per game. The junior is current sixth in the league with 3.8 receptions per game and top 10 in total yards.
  • Adam Callahan continues to pace the conference with 10.0 tackles per game. His 90 total tackles are tops in the league by nearby 20 and rank 11th in Division II. In GLVC games, the senior is the best among defensive players with 9.8 tackles per game with 40 solos.
