Jewell Opens GLVC Play with Win Over Illinois Springfield

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team opened the Great Lakes Valley Conference portion of the schedule on Monday night in the Mabee Center. The Cardinals defeated Illinois Springfield by a final of 74-68 to move to 2-4 on the season and 1-0 in conference action. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell got off to a quick start in the opening minutes, grabbing an eight point lead after five straight from Ayden Shannon. A Caitlin Behling triple closed the first quarter with the Cardinals leading 24-15. 
  • Illinois Springfield outscored Jewell 15-14 in the second quarter but the Cards went to the break leading 38-30. 
  • Shannon hit a bucket with 4:29 remaining in the third quarter to push the Jewell advantage back to double digits before the Prairie Stars began to chip away.
  • UIS went on a 15-2 run to take their first lead of the night just inside the start of the fourth period. Ayden Shannon and Bree Shannon teamed up with Kirsten Hauck to go on a quick 8-0 run and retake the lead. Kate Hillyer scored the last seven points, including 4-for-4 from the free throw line, to secure the victory.  



INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals shot a season best 42.6% from the field and 13-of-15 from the free throw line. 
  • Ayden Shannon led Jewell with 22 points while Hauck added 14 and Hillyer 11. 
  • Ella Bockenstedt played a critical role in the second half, finishing with nine points, a career high 10 rebounds, three blocks, and a steal. 
  • Bree Shannon handed out a career high seven assists, the most by a Cardinal since Sydney Offield's eight in February 2021.
