LIBERTY, Mo. - It was a tale of two halves on Thursday night but the William Jewell men's basketball held on to a 67-61 win over Maryville University. With the victory, the Cardinals improve to 17-10 overall and 11-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trailing by seven early, the Cardinals got a layup and a three pointer from Luke Jordan to spark a rally and give Jewell their first lead, 16-15. Kobe McKinley, Isaac Patterson, Jordan Jermain and Trey Shannon all hit triples over the next eight minutes to help the Cards push their lead to 19 late in the opening half and take a 38-22 lead into the locker room.
- Maryville came out of the break on a tear, going on an 18-2 run to tie the the game at 40 with under 14 minutes to play. Jermain stopped the skid with back-to-back buckets to put Jewell back in front with a 12-2 run for the home team.
- With the Cardinals leading by a dozen with just under six to go, the Saints made another push, as Ari Jackson scored nine straight for Maryville who pulled with three, 61-58. Eli Wingert scored two key layups before McKinley put the exclamation point on things with a dunk with 37 seconds on the clock to put the game on ice.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jermain paced a balanced offense with 16 points to go with seven rebounds and three assists.
- McKinley added 14 points and a team high eight board while Patterson finished with 13 points and Wingert 11.
- Jewell shot 54% in the first half while holding the Saints to 33% before roles were reversed as Maryville was 48% from the field and 41% from long range while Jewell was limited to just 2-of-9 from three in the second 20 minutes.
- The Cardinals outscored Maryville 38-24 in the paint while forcing 15 turnovers which led to 12 points.

Jewell will take on Missouri S&T on Saturday in the regular season finale at 3 p.m. Senior Day festivities will take place for the Cardinals five seniors prior to the game.
