Jewell Hangs On to Down Quincy in Double Overtime

QUINCY, Ill. - The William Jewell men's basketball team earned a hard fought 74-72 victory over Quincy University in double overtime on Saturday afternoon on the road. The Cardinals improve to 13-8 with the win and 7-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tied at 15 in the early going, Quincy went on a 16-6 run to open up an 10-point lead with under five minutes to go in the half. Back-to-back threes from Kobe McKinley gets Jewell back in it but the Hawks match it to give them their largest of the lead of the day at 38-27.
  • The Jewell offense came to life in the second half, quickly going on a 13-3 run to tie the game at 42 after a triple from Jordan Jermain. Two free throws from Justice Sutton and a bucket by Isaac Patterson gave the Cards a 60-56 lead. Jewell was held scoreless over the final two minutes of regulation as the Hawks rallied to tie the game and force overtime.
  • Consecutive threes to open the extra period gave Jewell a six point lead but Quincy follows with a 8-0 run to take the lead, 68-66. A Jermain jumper with 20 seconds remaining tied the game at 68. The Hawks missed two free throws with six ticks on the clock to send the game to a second overtime.
  • With two starters having fouled out, the Cardinals started the second extra period shorthanded. Kanukayi Gudza came off the bench to score five critical points to start things off and give Jewell a four-point cushion. The Hawks hit two free throws in the final minute but got no closer.
