ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball won the first team Great Lakes Valley Conference championship on Sunday afternoon, defeating third seed Lewis 83-65 to punch their ticket to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Cardinals improve to 21-10 overall, marking the most wins of the NCAA era.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lewis came out of the gate hot, taking a seven point lead, 30-23, and forcing a Cardinal timeout. Jewell got a three from Isaac Patterson to spark a 14-4 run. Kobe McKinley got a steal with four seconds remaining, going the length of the court for a slam at the buzzer to send the Cardinals to the break, leading 37-34.
- The Flyers tied the game at 45 early the second half but back-to-back threes from Patterson and Trey Shannon put Jewell back on top for good with 13 minutes to go. Lewis got back within two, 58-56 with 9:13 to play but the Cardinals turned the page to a 23-9 run over the next eight minutes to open up a game high 19 point lead.
- The Jewell bench was able to get in on the action over the final minutes before the buzzer sounded to give the Cardinals the program's first GLVC title.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jordan Jermain led the Cardinals with 26 points and seven rebounds while going 5-for-6 from downtown.
- Patterson added 19 points with Eli Wingert finishing with 16 and Shannon 10.
- Kobe McKinley, who was named the GLVC Tournament Most Valuable Player had 12 points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
- The Cardinals shot 60% for the game including 68% in the second half while holding Lewis to 46%.
- Jewell scored 24 points off 14 Flyer turnovers.
