Jewell Captures Series Victory over Nationally Ranked Prarire Stars

LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell College baseball team won their series against the no. 24 University of Illinois Springfield on Sunday afternoon by a score of 11-7. The series victory pushes Jewell to 10-7 on the year while now standing at 4-4 within the conference.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After allowing one in the top of the second, Jewell tied things up when Ben Click ripped a double down the left field line that rolled to the fence, scoring Nick Chanez from second.
  • With two men on in the third, Evan Jilbert homered into the wind to left field putting the Cardinals up 4-1.
  • With two outs and the bases loaded in the fourth Jordan Phillips stepped up and delivered a bases clearing double to deep left center field to go up by six runs. Two batters later, Dawson Tweet clobbered a no-doubter beyond to right field fence to make it 10-1.
  • After the Prairie Stars scored five runs in the fifth and sixth innings, a sac fly from Tweet scored Cole Conner as the Cardinals would cruise to a four-run victory, 11-7.

KEY STATS
  • Jacob Sullivan received the win, going five innings while striking out three and walking five. The junior is now 3-0 on the season.
  • Jilbert homered in back-to-back days after his grand slam on Saturday, his five home runs tie Phillips for most on the team this season.
  • The Cardinals are second in the conference in home runs with 29 on the year.

The Cardinals won't be away from Talley Stadium for long as they host Upper Iowa on Tuesday afternoon, first pitch is slated for 3:00 PM.
