KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The William Jewell men's lacrosse team started strong on Saturday but Rockhurst put together a big second half to take the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener, 16-8. The Cardinals drop to 5-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Jewell came out fast scoring four goals in the first quarter as Olivier LaPlante found the back of the net twice with Jake Wynecoop and Carson Wright adding one a piece as the Cardinals led 4-2 after the opening frame. 
• Rockhurst scored four quick goals to start the second period to take a 6-4 lead but the Cardinals came right back with scores from LaPlante and Tanner Garcia to knot things up at six. The Hawks scored just before the half to hold a one goal lead at the break. 
• The Cardinals were outscored 5-0 during the third quarter as Rockhurst built doubled up the score. 
• Garcia and Hunter Mee scored two for the Cards in the first 30 seconds of the fourth quarter but the Hawks scored the final four of the game to win 16-8. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• LaPlante led the Cardinals with three goals and four total points while Garcia added two scores on seven shots with a team high three ground balls. 
• Fynn Ziebarth finished with 18 saves. 
• With the win, Rockhurst holds an 8-6 lead in the Kansas City Crown series standings with at least 11 points still up for grabs this springs.
