LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell baseball team run-ruled the Southwest Baptist Bearcats under the lights of Talley Stadium Thursday night, a 18-8 victory. After falling in the middle innings Jewell used home runs and timely hitting to get back in front and take the 10-run win. Jewell moves to 13-10, 6-7 GLVC.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Leading 1-0 in the second inning, Dawson Tweet would come around to score after a lead-off double. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Evan Jilbert demolished a grand slam over the left centerfield fence to give Jewell the 6-0 lead.
- The Bearcats quickly responded in the top of the third after Chandler Ashby gave up back-to-back home runs, giving Southwest Baptist four runs, to cut the Cardinal lead to two.
- After the Bearcats tallied four more runs in the fourth, Cardinal bats battled back. Three RBI hits from Alex Epp, Jilbert, and Jordan Phillips gave Jewell back the lead. But the Cardinals weren't done, as Ben Click delivered a three-run homer to give Jewell the 12-8 lead.
- With one out in the fifth, Cardinals would hit back-to-back homers of their own with Epp and Jilbert hitting his second long ball of the game. Jewell would plate four total runs in the inning, the final being a sac fly off the bat of Jonah Sanford.
- Up by nine runs in the eighth and the bases loaded, Jilbert grounded into a fielder's choice, beating the throw on a would-be inning ending double play and rather gave Jewell the run-rule walk-off, 18-8.
