Cardinals Down Truman State to Advance in GLVC Tournament

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The fifth seeded William Jewell men's basketball team held on for a 72-70 win over fourth seed Truman State on Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. Jewell improves to 19-10 overall while Truman finishes their season at 15-14.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trailing by one at the 14:34 mark of the first half, the Cardinal defense clamped down, holding Truman State scoreless over the next four plus minutes to help Jewell take their largest lead of the day at 22-14.
  • After the Bulldogs rallied to retake the lead, back-to-back threes from Trey Shannon pushed the Cardinals back in front. Kobe McKinley scored the final five points of the half for Jewell who took a 36-30 lead into the break.
  • Truman State came out of the locker room with a 13-5 run to take a 43-41 lead with 14 minutes to play but a three from Isaac Patterson started a 9-2 run for the Cardinals to push their lead to 54-47.
  • Late in the action, the Bulldogs cut the lead down to just two with under four minutes to go but the Cardinals got key free throws down the stretch from Shannon, McKinley and Justice Sutton, who hit two with 18 seconds on the clock to make it a three point game, to hold on for the win.
