Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cardinals Upset Top Seed, No. 23 Ranked UIndy to Advance to First GLVC Title Game

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - After letting a second half lead slip away, the William Jewell men's basketball team put together a rally for their season to defeat top seed and No. 23 ranked UIndy 93-89 in overtime on Saturday in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. The win moves the Cardinals to 20-10 on the season as they advance to the program's first GLVC championship game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell got off to a slow start as the Greyhounds broke out to a 20-12 lead midway through the first half. The Cardinals followed by holding UIndy to just two points over nearly six minutes going on 20-2 run, capped by a three from Isaac Patterson to take a six point lead with under five to go in the half.
  • The Cardinals picked up where they left off to open the second half, expanding their lead to a game-high nine points after two free throws from Eli Wignert. UIndy slowly chipped away, outscoring the Cardinals 27-15 over a nine minute span to back in front 71-67 with 94 seconds remaining.
  • Trailing by three with just five seconds on the clock, Jordan Jermain found Kobe McKinley at the top of the key for clutch three point shot to knot things up at 74. The Greyhounds had the ball in their front court with three seconds to go but Joe Zhang got a hand on the inbound pass to force the start of the clock which ran out without a good look at the bucket for UIndy.
  • Jewell threw the first punch of overtime as Jordan Jermain scored the first five points, but each basket from the Cardinals was countered by UIndy as the overtime period featured five ties and three lead changes until Trey Shannon got an open layup which was followed by an unforced turnover, giving the Cardinals the ball with under 20 seconds to go.
  • Jermain connected on both free throws with 11 seconds remaining to make it a two possession game and send Jewell to their first title match up.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • McKinley led the Cardinals with 26 points while Patterson added 23 and seven rebounds.
  • Jermain finished with 19 points and five assists while Wingert had 15 points and a team high nine boards.
  • Jewell shot 54% from the floor and took advantage of 15 second chance points.
