LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell baseball team split their doubleheader on Saturday against the Quincy Hawks. After dropping the first contest 7-3, Jewell's offense exploded for nine runs off six hits in the first inning of game two on their way to a 11-7 final. After the afternoon Jewell sits at 6-5 on the year and 1-2 in the GLVC.
Game 1 (Jewell 3, Quincy 7)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A lead-off home run put the Hawks on the board quickly, who then extended their lead to four by the conclusion of the top of the fourth.
- After a pair of Dawson Tweet and Jake Wilcox singles in the fifth, Alex Epp delivered a two-run double to deep center field to cut the Quincy lead to two.
- Cole Conner reached on an error in the sixth and would ultimately score after a pair of wild pitches to make it 5-3.
- Quincy added two more runs in the top of the seventh to put it out of reach for the Cardinals 7-3.
KEY STATS
- Epp lead the team with two RBI and two doubles.
- Breven Yarbro received his first loss of the season after striking out seven for the third consecutive game, while allowing five earned runs.
Game 2 (Jewell 11, Quincy 7)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Cardinal bats came out of the intermission swinging, beginning with a two-run shot from Evan Jilbert to right center field knotting things up. Three batters later a single in the gap from Cole Conner scored Will Brant from second base.
- Nick Chanez hit his first home run of the season, a two-run homer that made it 5-2.
- Jake Wilcox and Alex Epp got in on the scoring, with a RBI single from Wilcox while Epp hit a bases-clearing double to leave the frame with a 9-2 lead.
- Brant put up his second run the following inning, scoring on a fielder's choice to go up 10-2.
- In the fifth the Hawks put up five runs to cut the Cardinal lead to three runs.
- Cale Blasi smacked his first career home run, a solo shot to right, to go up 11-7.
- Levi Ebersoldt struck out five of the last six batters to allow Jewell to hold on for the victory.
KEY STATS
- Jilbert went 2-for-3 with five RBI, highlighted by a two-run homer.
- Jake Sullivan received his second win on the year, going four innings and striking out a pair.
- The win snaps a six-game losing streak to Quincy going back to April 16, 2021.
