LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell Baseball team won in come from behind fashion Friday night under the lights of Talley Stadium, 10-8. The Cardinals were down by four as they entered the eighth inning against GLVC opponent McKendree University. The victory puts the Cardinals at 18-15 on the season and 9-12 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- McKendree struck early, plating two runs in the first.
- After being walked to lead-off to third Ben Click stole second base. The next batter Cale Blasi doubled to center to score Click from second and cut the lead to one.
- After allowing one in the fifth Jewell was able to score a pair to knot it up at three. Sanford scored on a sac-fly from Jake Wilcox, while a wild pitch scored Blasi from third.
- In the seventh, Wilcox would drive in Alex Epp from second with a double to deep center field to pull Jewell within two.
- With two outs and the bases loaded, Epp sent a liner off the Bearcat first baseman that ricocheted into shallow right field that would send Sanford and pinch-runner Will McCombs home. The next batter Wilcox would rip an RBI single to right to make it 8-7 McKendree.
- Still in the bottom of the eighth, with two men on and a 3-2 count Evan Jilbert hit a mammoth go-ahead home run to the deepest part of the yard to give the Cardinals the 10-8 lead and ultimately the victory.
KEY STATS
- Wilcox and Jilbert both led the way with two hits and three RBIs.
- Brogan McDougall would receive the win in relief, the first of the season.
- Jewell would strike out 10 batters, while McKendree would punch out 11.
