Cardinals Hang On For 6-5 Game One Win Against Crosstown Rival Rockhurst

LIBERTY, Mo. – Playing as the visitor at their home facility Thursday night, the William Jewell Baseball team would win 6-5 against Rockhurst University. The game was originally supposed to be played on the campus of Rockhurst but was changed because of field conditions due to rain. The win puts Jewell at 29-19 and 19-14 in the GLVC one week before the conference tournament begins. Jewell earns half of a Kansas City Crown point with the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first, beginning with a two-run double from Jordan Phillips to left field. Later in the inning another Cardinal RBI double, this time from Dawson Tweet, made it 3-0.
  • An Evan Jilbert single scored Cale Blasi in the second inning, but teams would leave the frame tied at four when Rockhurst would respond with four runs in the bottom of the inning.
  • In the third, Jonah Sanford would break the tie with a base knock up the middle that would end up scoring Tweet on the throw. A bases loaded walk in the sixth would score Jake Wilcox to give Jewell the 6-4 lead.
  • In the bottom of the eighth Rockhurst would plate one, but it would not be enough come the ninth as Jewell would hang on for a 6-5 victory.

KEY STATS
  • Charlie Rambo would get the game one start, getting the win to move to 2-3 on the year. The freshman would tally 110 pitches in six innings, striking out five, and allowing four earned runs.
  • Shortstop Alex Epp was the only Cardinal with two hits, while also leading the team drawing three walks.
  • Senior Brogan McDougall would record his staff-best fourth save of the season.
