QUINCY, Ill. - The William Jewell volleyball team went 1-2 over the weekend at the Hawk Invitational, falling to the host Hawks and Maryville University before finishing off with a win over Malone University. The Cardinals move to 1-6 on the season with the victory.
GAME 1: Quincy 3, Jewell 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The opening set of the weekend was a back-and-forth affair until late as the Hawks opened up a 23-19 lead on their way to a lead off victory.
- Tied at eight early, Quincy finished set two on a 17-7 run to win the frame 25-15.
- In set three, the Cardinals rallied. Tied at 15, Jewell went on a quick 3-1 run, capped by an ace from Lauren Harrell, to go on top 18-16. Quincy responded with a 5-1 run of their own to go back in front, but the Cardinals got two aces and kills from Emma Lea Benney and Katy Garrison to take the set 25-23.
- The Hawks came out firing in the final, opening up a 21-10 advantage and rolled to a 25-17 win.

GAME 2: Maryville 3, Jewell 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With the Cardinals trailing by just two midway through set one, the Saints went on a 6-1 run but Jewell came back with one of their own to pull within four late. Maryville won the final three points to take the opener 25-18.
- Set two was all Maryville as they rolled to a 25-11 victory and quick 2-0 lead.
- In set three, the Cardinals turned the momentum in their favor, jumping out to a 7-1 lead. Leading 12-5 after a Garrison kill, the Saints made a run to go on top, 17-16. An error, have Jewell a 22-19 lead but Maryville rallied to take six of the final seven points and win 25-23.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- LaPorta finished with a team high 10 kills while Thompson dished out 16 assists and Harrell 11.
- Alexis Nunn picked up 11 digs with Garrison and Beckmann each having two blocks.
GAME 3: Jewell 3, Malone 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trailing 15-12 in set one, the Cardinals chipped away before a 4-0 run, capped by a Macy Bartlett kill, gave Jewell a 23-16 lead. A kill from Beckmann coupled with a Malone error finished off the set in favor of the Cardinals.
- LaPorta and Garrison went on a rampage in set two, combining for 13 kills as Jewell held off a furious Malone rally to win 25-22.
- Trailing 8-5 early, Cardinals used a 20-3 run, led by seven kills from LaPorta, to cruise to a 25-11 win and first sweep of the season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Cardinals hit a season best .396, led by 22 kills from LaPorta on a .475 attack percentage. Garrison added 13 kills on 16 attempts with just a single error. (.750).
- Amauri Browning paced the defense with 11 digs while Beckmann and LaPorta each had three blocks.
- Thompson handed out a team best 22 assists while Harrell had 16.

Jewell returns to action next Friday as they travel to Monticello, Arkansas for a double dip with the hosts Arkansas Monticello and Christian Brothers before heading to Oklahoma for two matches on Saturday.
