Cardinals Earn Pair of 3-1 Victories

MONTICELLO, Ark. - The William Jewell volleyball team won their second and third consecutive matches on Friday earning 3-1 victories over Arkansas at Monticello and Christian Brothers University. The Cardinals improve to 3-6 with the victories. 

GAME 1: Jewell 3, Arkansas Monticello 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trailing 7-5 early, Jewell went on a 7-2 run to go in front after an ace from Samantha Thompson. The Cardinals expanded their advantage to 20-15 late and cruised to a 25-18 win behind five combined kills from Katy Garrison and Bella LaPorta to finish off the set. 
  • In set two, Jewell used a 13-9 run, capped by a LaPorta kill, to jump out to a 20-14 lead. The teams traded points late as the Cardinals held off UAM to win 25-21. 
  • The Blossoms came out in set three on a roll, grabbing an 18-8 advantage. Jewell rallied with a 12-5 run to pull within three but UAM won 25-20 to force an extra set. 
  • Tied at 11 midway through the fourth frame, the Cardinals went on a 10-3 run, aided by six Blossom errors, to grab the lead and win 25-20.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell finished with a season high 90 teams digs, led by Alexis Nunn's 20. 
  • LaPorta finished with a double-double of 19 kills, 16 digs to go with two blocks.
  • Carolien Beckmann led the team with five blocks while Thompson also had a double-double handing out 26 assists and grabbing 12 digs
  • Amarui Browning added 14 digs to put four in double-figures. 

GAME 2: Jewell 3, Christian Brothers 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tied at 17 in the opener, the Cardinals got three straight kills from Macy Barlett, Madison Grekstas, and Lauren Harrell to go in front. The Bucs retook the lead 23-22 but Grekstas tied things up again for Jewell. The teams exchanged points until back-to-back kills from CBU gave them the first frame, 29-27. 
  • The Cardinals came out firing in set two, breaking out to an 18-6 lead as Garrison posted four blocks during the run. A McKinzie Thompson ace finished it off, 25-17 for Jewell to knot the match, 1-1. 
  • Consecutive kills from LaPorta gave the Cards a 16-10 lead in set three but the Bucs rallied to tie things up at 17. Jewell took advantage of four CUB errors to go back in front as Beckmann and Emma Lea Benney teamed up for a block to give the Cardinals the 25-20 win. 
  • Jewell fell into a 21-13 hole in the second set but put together a rally to finish on an 11-1 run and take set three 25-23 and the match, 3-1. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • The Cardinals hit .291 on the match while holding the Bucs to a .152 attack percentage. 
  • LaPorta led the offense with 20 kills while Grekstas added 13 and Garrison 11. 
  • Samantha Thompson finished with her second double-double of the day with 32 assists and 16 digs while LaPorta also had 12 digs. 
  • Garrison put up a season best six blocks with Lauren Harrell adding 16 assists. 

UP NEXT
The Cardinals have a quick turnaround as they are in Alva, Okla. on Saturday to take on Northwestern Oklahoma State and Tabor College in their final tuneup matches before Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
