Cardinals Shutout Davenport in Second Half but Fall 17-7

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell football team suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon, falling 17-7 to Davenport University, who is receiving votes in the national polls. The Cardinal defense held the Panthers scoreless in the second half but drop to 3-1 on the season. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Davenport drove the length of the field on their opening drive before Adam Callahan forced a fumble on the two yard line to get the stop. 
  • The Cardinals could not convert on their opening drive and the Panthers were able to get three points late in the first quarter to take the lead.  
  • Jewell had an opportunity early in the second frame to tie the game but Josh Click's 29-yard attempt was blocked. The Panthers flipped the field on their ensuing drive scored scoring on a 27-yard touchdown run by Myren Harris to extend their lead to 10. 
  • Davenport added a score with a one-yard run in the final minutes of the first half to take a 17-0 lead into the locker room. 
  • The Jewell defense turned things up in the second half as an 11-yard sack from Justin Endicott and Derrick Von Hubbard was followed by a interception from rookie Jonny Williams. The turnover led to a 13-play drive ending in a five-yard touchdown pass to AJ Austene to get the Cards on the board. 
  • Callahan grabbed his second interception of the season on the ensuing Davenport but the Cardinals could not convert. 
  • Jewell got inside the Panther five yard line in the fourth quarter but came up empty as Davenport secured two late interceptions to seal the game.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Callahan led the Cardinals and set an NCAA era single game record with 18 tackles to go with two forced fumbles and one interception. 
  • Williams added seven tackles and a pick while Endicott, Von Hubbard, and Max McKenzie all contributed to at least one sack. 
  • Tucker Griffin was 25-of-45 for 238 yards passing with one score. 
  • Keaundre McCullough ran for 90 yards while Jalen Bethany hauled in four passes for 101 yards. 
  • Both defenses shined as the teams combined for just 588 yards of total offense.
