Fourth Quarter Run Pushes McKendree Past Jewell

LEBANON, Ill. - The William Jewell women's basketball team led McKendree University for three-plus quarters but a late run by the Bearcats lifted them past the Cardinals 64-51. Jewell drops to 3-8 overall and 1-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cardinals got off to a strong start as a steal and layup from Bree Shannon gave Jewell a 14-6 lead midway through the first quarter. The Bearcats cut the lead to two but Ella Bockenstedt hit a triple as Jewell led 19-15 after one.
  • McKendree took a brief lead but a jumper by Paris Opelt put the Cardinals back in front followed by a layup from Ayden Shannon making it 28-25 at the break.
  • The Bearcats used a 10-2 run early in the third period to take the lead but five straight points from Ayden Shannon put Jewell back on top, 37-35.
  • Tied at 39 in the final seconds of the quarter, McKendree started a 12-4 run that bled into the fourth as the Cardinals fell into a 51-43 hole but rallied with a 6-0 run to make it a two-point game with five minutes to go. The Bearcats closed the game on a 13-2 run to win 64-51.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Hillyer and Ayden Shannon each finished with 14 points while Ella Bockenstedt added 11.
  • Bree Shannon added four steals, five rebounds and three assists.
  • The Cardinals shot 37% from the field and scored 32 points in the paint while holding the Bearcats to their second lowest offensive output this season.

Jewell will look to rebound on Saturday as they travel to Maryville University for a 1 p.m. tip off.
