LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell football team put together a fourth quarter rally to force overtime on Saturday but a blocked point after attempt was the difference in an eventual 34-33 loss to Quincy University. The Cardinals fall to 2-4 on the season and 0-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Jewell got on the board first, scoring on their opening drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass from
Tyler Kubat to
Nate Barnett but Quincy quickly knotted things up with a short two-yard touchdown.
Both offenses stalled early in the second quarter until the Hawks took the lead with just over three minutes remaining in the opening half. On the first play of the ensuing drive Kubat again connected with Barnett, this time for 75 yards, to even the score before taking a lead into the locker room after a one-yard touchdown run by
Ronnie Thomas, Jr.
In the fourth quarter, Quincy hit a 44-yard field goal before intercepting the next pass to move from down seven to up three, 24-21, in a matter of moments.
Bleu Renfrow connected on a 41-yard field of his own to again tie things up but the Hawks hit a 45-yarder to go back in front 27-24 with 61 seconds remaining. Jewell drove the field and set up Renfrow for a 49-yard field goal as the clock expired to force overtime, tied at 27.
The the Cardinals wasted no time, scoring on the first play of the extra period as
Layne Cavanah hauled in a 25-yard pass from Kubat but the point after attempt was blocked by Quincy's Kendrick Adimado. The Hawks stalled on the eight yard, with three incomplete passes, including on fourth down, but an ill-timed interference penalty gave QU an additional play. The Hawks' ran in the two-yard touchdown with Kiko Moreno connecting on the PAT for the walk off win.

- Jewell out paced the Hawks with 377 total yards of offense, and 6.3 per play.
- Barnett caught four passes for 108 yards on four catches and two touchdowns while Reece Thomas had a season high seven receptions.
- Ronnie Thomas, Jr. led the ground game with 79 yards on 16 carries for an average of nearly five per rush.
- Kubat finished 20-for-32 for 277 yards, three scores, and two interceptions.
- Keagan Hart and Kyler Craigg led the defense with 10 tackles a piece with Derrick Von Hubbard grabbing a sack for eight yards.
