Jewell Wins Third Straight With Sweep of Midwest Region Crossover

HAMMOND, Ind. - The William Jewell volleyball team went through the Midwest Region Crossover without a blemish after a 3-1 victory over Ursuline College and 3-1 win over Lake Superior State on Saturday. The three wins improve the Cardinals to 4-15 on the season. 

Jewell 3, Ursuline 1
  • The early morning match started evenly as neither team held more than a three point lead until late. Tied at 18-all, the Cardinals closed the opener on a 7-1 run after a two kills from Emma Lea Benney to take the lead. 
  • Ursuline jumped out to the early advantage in set two and finished off a 25-19 win to even the match. 
  • The Cardinals used a late 14-6 run, led by four service aces, including two from Reaghan Bible, to go back in front after a 25-13 win. 
  • Trailing 4-2 in the early moments of set four, Jewell went on a 19-4 run with 11 kills, led by three Macy Bartlett's three, to roll to a 25-14 win. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals hit a season high .264 with 57 kills, led by 15 a piece from Bartlett and Benney while Caroline Beckmann added 10. 
  • Bible handed out a career best 41 assists while adding three aces. 
  • Madison Roney picked up 15 digs and Alexis Nunn 14 while Emily Brannan had three blocks. 

Jewell 3, Lake Superior State 1
  • The opening set of the weekend finale was highly contested and included nine lead changes and seven ties. Knotted at 23-all, the Cardinals committed three errors to allow Lake Superior to escape with the 26-24 win. 
  • Set two was a series of runs, multiple by each team. Trailing 24-22 late, Jewell held off set point and got kills from Beckmann, Bartlett, and two from by Benney to rally for the 27-25 win. 
  • A quick 5-0 spurt midway through set three gave Jewell a 17-10 lead as they rolled to a nine point win, finishing off with a Brannan kill and Singleton ace. 
  • After LSSU took a 17-7 lead in set four, the Cardinals rallied, using a 16-4 run to go in front 23-21. The Lakers knotted things up but kills from Beckmann and Bartlett and gave Jewell their third win of the weekend.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • For the second time in three games, the Cardinals put up double digit aces, paced by Ashlynn Rowland's five. 
  • Beckmann finished with a team high 16 kills with Benney adding 12. 
  • Bible had 14 digs and a second straight career high game with 45 assists. 
     
UP NEXT
Jewell returns home next weekend to host Upper Iowa and Truman State.
