CARDINAL NOTES
- William Jewell (2-5, 0-4) steps back into Great Lakes Valley Conference play this week, where they'll be for the remainder of the season. The Cardinals and Peacocks are 1-1 all-time as Jewell took the first meeting 31-6 in 2023 before falling in overtime 38-31 last fall.Â
- Jewell is coming off a weather-shortened 35-7 loss on Saturday to Northeastern State. The Cardinals started strong, knotted at 7-all early but two turnovers helped the Riverhawks to expand to a 28-7 halftime. The visitors added an additional score before lightning ended the day early.Â
- The Cardinals enter the week ranked second in the GLVC and 15th nationally in yards per punt return with 13.57, all of which are accounted for by Layne Cavanah. The senior is third in the league with 95 yards on seven returns with a long of 35 yards.Â
- Bleu Renfrow did not have a field goal attempt last week for the first time this season. The true freshman boasts the longest made field goal in the GLVC this fall, at 52 yards and has hit from beyong 45 twice. On the other side this week is Upper Iowa's Nathan Behne, who is the reigning GLVC Special Teams Player of the Week after hitting from 51 yards last week.Â
- Defensively, Jewell boasts two of the top seven players in the GLVC in sacks as Derrick Von Hubbard sits fourth with 5.5 total while Parker Cummins has four. The latter missed the UIndy game on October 4 and has added 1.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss since his return.
- Beau Doughty caught his third career touchdown last weekend and second of the season with a three-yard reception. The senior has caught seven passes for 72 yards and an average of 10.29 per catch.
- Jewell will have their hands ful this weekend with Upper Iowa quarterback, Darryl Overstreet, Jr. The senior is sixth in the GLVC averaging more than 248 yards of total offense per game, including 159.2 through the air. His favorite target, Mante Morrow, the league's leading receiver is not listed on the depth chart for the second straight week.Â
- Jewell has lost five straight games for the first time since 2023 when the Cardinals closed the season on a six game skid. Last season, after falling four times, including twice in overtime, Jewell rallied to win two of their final four. Now, the Cards will look to get back on track in the final four contests of the season but will have to do so in tough match ups with teams such as Upper Iowa, Missouri S&T, and Truman State. Â
