Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

UIS Storms Back to Down Cardinals 61-60 in GLVC Opener

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. The William Jewell men's basketball team led by as many as 15 in the second half but Illinois Springfield went on a 13-2 run over the final three minutes to storm back for the 61-60 win. The Cardinals fall to 2-5 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cardinals never trailed until the final nine seconds of the game, taking an early seven point lead after two free throws from Ashton Jermain. The first half remained back-and-forth as Jewell held a 28-24 advantage at the break.
  • UIS cut the deficit to just two moments into the second half but the Cardinals followed with 23-10 run over the next 11 minutes, capped by an Isaac Patterson three pointer, to grab their largest lead of the day at 51-36.
  • The Stars' Jordan Rice scored 13 of the next 17 UIS points to pull the hosts within one with just 40 seconds to play. Justice Sutton hit a turnaround floater with 12 ticks on the clock to put the Cardinals in front by three but a Jewell turnover, their fifth of the final two minutes of action, gave UIS the ball under their own basket as Rice converted the game winner.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Sutton finished with a team high 19 points while Patterson added 15 points and a team best eight rebounds. Jermain chipped in a career high of 11 to put three in double figures.
  • Both teams shot 36% from the field but struggled from the outside as Jewell shot 25% while the Stars connected on 20% from three.
  • Rice led all scorers, finishing with 40 of UIS' 61 points.
