Cold Fourth Quarter Pushes Truman Past Cardinals

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell basketball team held strong for three quarters on Saturday but a shooting drought in the final period allowed Truman State to slip past by a final of 73-61. The Cardinals fall to 5-13 on the season and 3-9 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Knotted up in the early going Truman went on a quick 5-0 run, capped by a Molly Joyce three in the final seconds of the first quarter to hold a 20-15 advantage after 10 minutes.
  • The Bulldogs expanded the lead to double digits early in the second period before the Cardinals mounted a rally. Jewell went on a 13-4 run, led by four points a piece from Kirsten Hauck and Kate Hillyer to pull within one. The Bulldogs got a late steal and bucket to hold a 37-34 lead at the intermission.
  • Trailing by eight just a minute into the second half Hillyer and Hauck combined for 10 points to tie things up followed by three points from Ayden Shannon to put the Cardinals in front, 47-46.
  • In the fourth quarter, the Cardinals went cold but still managed to hold a one possession game with under two minutes to go. The Bulldogs, however, were 10-of-12 from the free throw line to extend the final score to a dozen.
