Cardinals Take Down No. 9 Ranked Missouri S&T to Win Third Straight

ROLLA, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team held ninth ranked Missouri S&T without a field goal in overtime to defeat the Miners 85-80 for their third straight victory. The Cardinals improve to 9-14 on the season and 6-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell got off to a fiery start, opening with a 12-0 run to force an early Miner timeout, just over two minutes into the game. Missouri S&T slowly chipped away over the next 12 minutes to eventually take their first lead with 5:50 to go in the first half. The Cardinals kept things close, trailing by just five at the break, 38-33. 
  • In the second half, Jewell continued to hang around, eventually retaking a two point lead on back-to-back threes from Jason Thirdkill, Jr. and Luke Jordan. The Miners followed with a 14-3 run to open up a nine point lead and looked like they might put the game away with just 5:36 to go. Jewell outscored Missouri S&T 13-4 over the final minutes, led by eight point from Jordan Jermain, to knot the score at 77-all and force overtime. 
  • The Cardinals, playing without two fouled out players, hit a couple of early buckets by Jermain and Bradley Lightbourne to hold an 81-78 lead midway through the overtime period. The Miners hit two free throws with under two minutes on the clock to pull within one Jordan hit a one with 8.7 seconds left to make it a two possession game and win it for the Cardinals. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Four players finished in double figures, led by Jermain with 27. Jordan added 12 while Thirdkill, Jr. and Kyle Scharbrough each chipped in 11. 
  • Jermain and Thirdkill, Jr. had seven rebounds with the former handing out five assists.
  • Kanukayi Gudza scored nine points, including seven in the second half, while grabbing four steals.  
  • Jewell shot 49% for the day and were 11-of-25 from downtown. 
  • The win marks the highest ranked road win of the NCAA era and the second highest behind only a 2014 victory of then-No. 2 Drury.
