LIBERTY, Mo. - Playing in her 100th game,
Kate Hillyer scored a career 27 points on Saturday to lead the William Jewell women's basketball team to a 71-49 win over Lincoln University of Missouri. The Cardinals improve to 6-18 overall and 4-14 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Lincoln came out with a quick 6-0 lead, the Cardinals responded with an 11-0 run, capped by a traditional three-point play from Paris Opelt. Bree Shannon added a three point play of her own to close the quarter and give Jewell a 16-10 lead.
- Caitlin Behling hit a triple to start the second period that extended the lead to nine but the Blue Tigers hung around, trailing by just seven at the break.
- Midway through the third quarter, Jewell went on a 12-4 run to build a 15-point advantage. LU got five quick points but Hillyer was fouled a last second attempt and converted all three free throws to make 48-35 after three frames.
- Hillyer scored eight of the Cardinals first 16 points of the fourth quarter, including two threes, to push their lead to a game-high 24 with under four minutes to play. Maja Komaszynska came off the bench to score four late points as Jewell cruised to the 22 point win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Hillyer led all scorers with 27 points while Opelt added a dozen to go with a team high seven rebounds and and four steals.
- Bree Shannon finished with nine points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
- Jewell shot 46% from the floor and were 16-of-20 from the free throw line.
- The Cardinals forced 16 turnovers that led to 18 points.
