LIBERTY, Mo. – In games rescheduled due to weather last week, the William Jewell baseball team split their season home-opening doubleheader Sunday afternoon against Upper Iowa. After a 7-1 loss in the opening game, the Cardinals battled back to stamp an 8-6 win over the Peacocks. Jewell moves to 2-2 on the year.
Game 1 (Jewell 1, Upper Iowa 7)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams traded scoreless innings for the first four innings before an Upper Iowa five-run top of the fifth that saw five fits, five runs, and a grand slam to break the tie.
- After a double that rolled to the outfield fence by Will McCombs, an errant throw from the Peacocks first baseman allowed the senior to score the first run of the afternoon for Jewell to make it 6-1.
- Upper Iowa would tack one more run in the 6th to take the 7-1 win.
KEY STATS
- Chandler Ashby got the start, going 4.1, striking out five, and walking one getting the loss.
- The Cardinals gave up 11 hits, while just notching four of their own – led by two from McCombs.
Game 2 (Jewell 8, Upper Iowa 6)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Leadoff hitter Jordan Phillips started things off with a blast to left to give Jewell a quick 1-0 lead to begin the game.
- Entering the bottom of the 5th the Cardinals trailed 5-1. With one man on freshman llyas van den Bos bombed a two-run shot to deep center field. Later in the inning a pair of RBI singles from Phillips and Evan Jilbert pulled Jewell within one.
- With the bases loaded Jewell would add two more runs courtesy of a bases loaded hit-by-pitch and later a wild pitch to take a 7-5 lead going into the 5th.
- The Peacocks would add one more run after to Jewell scored in the 5th for a 8-6 final score.
KEY STATS
- Charlie Rambo started on the bump, recording his first win on the year going five innings and striking out six.
- Four Cardinals had two hits in the nightcap, with Jewell out-hitting the Peacocks 10 to six.
- van den Bos's 4th inning home run is not only his first homer, but also his first college hit.
