Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cardinals Get Past Rockhurst in Thriller, 80-78

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team got a bucket from Kyle Scharbrough with 2.1 seconds remaining to down crosstown rival Rockhurst University, 80-78 to improve to 8-14 overall and 5-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With the Cardinals leading by one after an early Luke Jordan layup, Rockhurst went on a 20-7 run to open up a 10-point lead. Two free throws from Jordan Jermain sparked a rally that ended with three straight triples from Kyle Scharbrough and Ashton Jermain that put the Cardinals back in front by one, 26-25, and forced a Hawk timeout.
  • Rockhurst responded with a quick 10-2 run but Jordan Jermain took over, scoring six points over the next 90 seconds to make it a one point game at the break.
  • The Hawks maintained their lead in the early going of the second half, as a three from Brian Hawthorne made it a seven point Rockhurst advantage. Jordan Jermain again put the team on his back, scoring seven straight to give Jewell a 59-58 lead.
  • The teams went back and forth for several minutes until the Hawks got an offensive rebound tip in to go on top by six with 2:34 to play and looked to put things away but the elder Jermain had other plans, scoring the next 10 Cardinal points to make it 78-76, in favor of Jewell. The Hawks hit two free throws to tie it up but Scharbrough gave the Cardinals the win with a shot off the glass as Rockhurst's last second attempt fell short.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jordan Jermain finished with a game-high 35 points, to move into third all-time surpassing Chris Trout, and had nine rebounds and five assists.
  • Jason Thirdkill, Jr. picked up 12 points while Scharbrough added a career high 10 as all nine Cardinals who played scored at least two points.
  • Jewell shot 49% from the field and were 13-of-15 from the free throw line while scoring 36 points in the paint and comitting just six turnovers.
