Fort Lewis Uses Second Half Surge to Slip Past Cardinals, 12-11

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's lacrosse team suffered a tough 12-11 loss to Fort Lewis College on Wednesday afternoon to drop to 4-4 on the season. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals started as strong as Olivia Fornelli scored just 11 seconds into the game followed by back-to-back goals from Toryn Podschwit to make it 3-0 Cardinals.
  • Fornelli added another score while Ella Childress found cage to start the second period and give Jewell a 5-0 cushion. The Skyhawks got on the board but Elle Eastwood countered just 10 seconds later. Fort Lewis scored two more before the half as Jewell led 7-3 at the break. 
  • With the Cardinals in front, 8-4, Fort Lewis scored three straight to pull within one late in the third quarter. Eastwood stopped the skid as Jewell pushed their advantage back to four to start the fourth period. 
  • The Skyhawks made a late push, scoring four goals in the span of just over two minutes to tie the game at 11-all. With just 88 seconds to play, Fort Lewis' Diamond Velasco scored her third of the season to take the lead. Jewell won the ensuing draw control but two late turnovers sealed the win for FLC. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals out shot Fort Lewis 32-24 and won 18-of-27 draw controls, while forcing a season high 31 turnovers. 
  • Fornelli put up a team high six points with four goals and two assists while winning seven draw controls.
  • Podschwit scored three times and Eastwood, twice while Kaylee Gross had four ground balls and four draw controls. 
  • Claire Eastwood recorded three saves in cage while Brynn Devers had four. 

UP NEXT
Jewell is off until March 29 when they host McKendree in a non-conference match up.
