BOLIVAR, Mo. – In their doubleheader versus Southwest Baptist University on Saturday, William Jewell lost two close games to the Bearcats. The Cardianls kept their bats hot in the intense, high scoring close loss in the first game, before fizzling out to a lower scoring loss in the second game. Jewell falls to 7-11 on the season and 0-6 in conference play.
Game 1 (Jewell 12, Southwest Baptist 13)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cardinals had a successful three run 1st inning, with Justin George batting in Jordan Phillips, Evan Jilbert scoring on an error, and Justin George scoring to go up 3-0 in the top of the first.
- After a six-run first for Southwest Baptist, Jewell plated one run courtesy of an RBI double from Santiago Jimenez scoring Justin George to make it 6-4 Bearcats.
- Jewell was back on top in the top of the 4th, adding three runs as Evan Jilbert hit one over the fence with Luke Bies and Cale Blasi on base to retake the lead 7-6.
- Action continued into the 5th as Will McCombs was batted in and Cale Blasi had a solo home run, giving the lead back to the Cardinals 8-7.
- Jewell scored three runs over the last four innings but tied 12-12 in the bottom of the ninth the Bearcats walked it off for the game one win.
KEY STATS
- Jilbert had a double and a home run, batting in three runs, and touching home plate three times.
- Justin George scored a run each of the three times he got on base. His two singles also brought in two runs.
- Four pitchers appeared for Jewell, with Charlie Rambo pitching six innings. Cam Lawson and Ryan Hunt pitched both pitched for one inning, in the seventh and eighth respectively. Nick Fitzanko finished the 9thand tallied the loss, making his record 1-1 on the season.
Game 2 (Jewell 4, Southwest Baptist 6)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bearcats started the scoring this game, scoring five unanswered runs in the first three innings.
- Jewell fired back in the next two innings. In the 4th, Evan Jilbert scored during a fly out and Santiago Jimenez hit a double to right field that brought Cale Blasi home to cut the Bearcat lead to three runs. Justin George hit a long single to center field in the 5th that batted in Ilyas van den Bos to make it 5-3.
- Southwest Baptist added another run in the 6th.
- The Cards were unable to come back in the 7th, as Luke Bies scored the last run of the game as Jewell would fall 6-4.
KEY STATS
- Pitcher Brody Grawe tallied the loss to his record, falling to 0-2 on the season.
- Jimenez went 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI double.
