Cardinals Get First GLVC Win Of 2025

BOLIVAR, Mo. – After dropping both games Saturday, William Jewell baseball was able to take one game versus Southwest Baptist on Sunday to avoid the series sweep and record their first conference win. Jewell saw a 13-3 win in the first game, while in the second game Jewell fell 13-12 in extra innings. The Cardinals are now 8-12 overall and 1-7 in GLVC action.
Game 1 (Jewell 13, Southwest Baptist 3)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cardinal bats got to work early beginning with a five-run 1st inning that saw the first five batters get on base before the first out for a fast 5-0 lead. It began with an RBI-single from Justin George up the middle, while a pair of sac-flies added to the lead.
  • In the 3rd a single from Cale Blasi scored catcher Ben Click to open up the scoring. One batter later Santoago Jimenez singled to left that scored Will McCombs. Later in the inning Luke Bies mashed his second homer of the year, a two-run blast, to help Jewell to a 10-0 3rd inning score.
  • Both Bearcats and Cardinals plated three runs in the remainder of the game for Jewell to get their first conference win, 13-3.

KEY STATS
  • Chandler Ashby got the game one start on the mound, striking out a season-high nine batters in his six innings of work, allowing only two runs.
  • George went 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs, while Blasi was a perfect 3-for-3 in his plate appearances also with three RBIs.

Game 2 (Jewell 12, Southwest Baptist 13)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After scoring five runs in the first of game one, it wasn't until the second inning in game two when Jewell plated another five runs starting off with an Ilyas van den Bos two-RBI double to left that gave Jewell a 2-1 lead.
  • Jordan Phillips was walked with the bases loaded, Evan Jilbert put up a sac-fly and Justin George singled scoring Luke Bies for the 5-1 lead.
  • A pair of doubles in the 3rd from Jimenez and Jonah Sanford provided insurance after Jewell allowed two runs in the bottom of the 2nd.
  • Bies led-off the 5th with a solo home run, his second long ball of the day, as both teams would post three-run 5th innings but it would be the Bearcats who walked the game off in the bottom of the 10th inning for a 13-12 win.

KEY STATS
  • Jacob Sullivan got the start going five and striking out four. Cam Lawson posted a career-high five punchouts in his three innings of relief.
  • Jewell collected 12 hits, including four doubles, while successfully stealing three of four bases in the night-cap.
  • George had six total hits, all singles, between the two games Sunday.
