Phillips' Three Homer Day, Including Walk-Off, Gives Jewell Two Wins Over Truman

 
LIBERTY, Mo. – An afternoon of home runs from the William Jewell baseball team resulted in two wins versus Truman State University. Between the two games Jewell combined for seven homers, three of which came from Jordan Phillips including his walk-off solo shot in the nightcap. Jewell moves to just under .500, 11-12, on the season while holding a 3-7 record in the GLVC. 
 
Game 1 (Jewell 12, Truman 6)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Down 1-0 in the second inning Jonah Sanford gave Jewell their first run of the game when he hit Ben Click in from third base to tie the game at one run each.
  • Bottom of the third down by one a two-run double to right center off the bat of Justin George gave Jewell back the lead. Two batters later Camden Dayton singled to left followed by an RBI base knock from Cale Blasi to give Jewell a 5-2 lead after three.
  • Will McCombs led off the fourth with a solo homer, his first of the season, while after another Cardinals run scored third baseman Jordan Phillips sent his fourth long ball over the fence to increase the led to four runs.
  • Dayton and Phillips each blasted home runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to secure the 12-6 victory.

KEY STATS
  • Jake Sawyer received his second win of the year moving to 2-1. The senior tossed six innings with three strikeouts and one walk.
  • Phillips' two home-runs marks his second career multi-homer game (Feb. 25, 2024 v. Northern State)
  • Eight of the nine Cardinals in the order recorded at least one hit, while Phillips, Jilbert, Dayton, and McCombs all hat multi-hit performances.
 
 
Game 2 (Jewell 6, Truman 5)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell lit up the scoreboard first with a bases-clearing stand-up double from Camden Dayton to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Two batters later Will McCombs hit Dayton home with a double for the 4-0 lead.
  • With runners on second and third, a near wild-pitch from Chandler Ashby bounced off of the backstop and freshman catcher Illyas van den Bos made the eyes-up play to throw the Bulldog runner on second out in the top of the second inning.
  • After a three-run top of the fifth, Justin George rocked the sixth Cardinal home run of the day over the deepest part of the yard.
  • The Bulldogs tied it at 5-5 in the top of the seventh inning, but Jordan Phillips would call game with a solo home run into the left field bullpen, his third homer of the day, as Jewell walked it off 6-5.

KEY STATS
  • Ashby went six innings, striking out six and allowing four runs in his start. Cam Lawson came into the game in the seventh, getting the win after getting all three outs. It is Lawson's first career collegiate win.
  • Dayton contributed for three RBIs, half of the Jewell runs scored.
  • Jewell batters combined for only two strikeouts, compared to the seven punch-outs Bulldog batters had.
