Dayton's Three-Hit, Four-RBI Day Delivers Cardinals Past Northwest

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The William Jewell baseball team took down MIAA opponent Northwest Missouri for the second time on Tuesday afternoon. Jewell scored three runs in the final two inning to secure the two-run win. Jewell is 13-12 on the year and 5-7 in GLVC games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell didn't collect more than one hit in any inning until the fourth when a leadoff double from Justin George put a runner in scoring position for the Cardinals. Two batters later Camden Dayton would single but Jewel remained scoreless and down 1-0 after four.
  • In the sixth inning Northwest walked George and again two batters later Dayton collected a hit, this time a two-run homer that gave Jewell a 2-1 lead.
  • Tied 2-2 going into the eighth Dayton notched his third hit of the game, a two-run double to give Jewell sole possession of the lead.
  • Evan Jilbert had an RBI triple in the ninth as the Beacats attempted to mount a comeback but fell short giving Jewell the 5-3 win.

KEY STATS
  • Kyle Fitzgerald got the start tossing 5.2 innings, striking out three, and allowing only one earned run. Graduate student Ryan Foley received the win, the first of his season.
  • The Cardinal's starting third baseman this season, Jordan Phillips, pitched .2 innings recording a strikeout and flyout, while Nick Fitzanko earned his GLVC-most fourth save.
  • Dayton went 3-for-4 at the plate with four of the five Cardinal RBIs and was a triple shy of the cycle. It is the redshirt junior's second three-hit game this year.

UP NEXT
Jewell will open up a three game series on Friday, hosting the Cardinals of Saginaw Valley State at 6:00 p.m.
