Box Score LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell baseball team fell in a nonconference match-up to the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals 14-8 Friday night. The loss sets Jewell at 13-13 on the season and they remain 5-7 in GLVC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Saginaw Valley struck first with a lead-off homer two pitches into the game but Jewell answered right back in the bottom of the first with back-to-back homers from their first two men in the order Cale Blasi and Evan Jilbert to take the 2-1 lead.
- A lone run in the third and three in the fourth for Saginaw Valley put the visiting Cardinals up 5-2 when an RBI double off the bat of Jonah Sanford sent Camden Dayton home to cut the lead to two runs.
- Both teams held quiet until the seventh inning when Saginaw Valley poured in six runs in the top of the inning. Two bases loaded walks and a wild pitch plated three Jewell runs in the bottom of the inning to keep it within five runs.
- The visiting Cardinals added three more runs while Jewell added two in the bottom of the eighth, including a solo home run from Will McCombs, but was not enough to hold on as Saginaw Valley won 14-8.
KEY STATS
- Charlie Rambo started and received the loss to move to 3-3. He went 3.1 innings, striking out five, and issuing three walks.
- Jewell used only two pitchers in the first 6.1 innings, but combined for five in the subsequent 2.2 innings issuing 12 total walks.
- Blasi had a four-hit night, the first of such kind for the center fielder in a Jewell jersey.
