High Scoring Affair Gives Saginaw Valley Second Win Over Jewell

LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell baseball team lost to the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals on Saturday afternoon. Saginaw scored runs in eight of their nine innings at the plate to keep a healthy lead over Jewell all afternoon. Jewell drops to 13-14 after the loss with a 5-7 GLVC record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • An early sac-fly put Saginaw up 1-0, but Jewell responded right back in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run double that dribbled down the left field line to score Evan Jilbert and Cale Blasi.
  • A six-run top of the second broke it open for the visiting Cardinals but again Jewell answered with a two-run bottom of the inning, this time it back back-to-back home runs from Luke Bies and Blasi to set the score 8-4 after two frames.
  • Through the middle innings Saginaw put five runs on the board while Jewell plated a pair in the fourth, including a leadoff pinch-hit homer from Ben Click made it 11-6.
  • Jewell had a four-run rally in the bottom of the eighth assisted with a pair of errors from the Saginaw second baseman but fell short as Saginaw added three more in the ninth for the 17-11 final.

KEY STATS
  • Starting pitcher Chandler Ashby went only two inning receiving the loss. Jacob Sullivan was the pitcher out of the bullpen, tossing a season-high five strikeouts.
  • Bies went 3-for-4 at the plate, including his fourth homer of the year.
  • Jewell was walked only five time compared to issuing 10 base on balls issued by the Jewell Cardinals pitching staff.
