LIBERTY, Mo. - After falling into an early hole, the William Jewell women's lacrosse team stormed back to tie the game but a late goal pushed the Missouri Western Griffons to the 11-10 win. The Cardinals gall to 6-7 overall and 1-2 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Missouri Western came out of the gate hot, grabbing an 8-0 lead, including seven first quarter goals.
- Elle Eastwood and Olivia Fornelli began to turn the momentum with two quick scores to open the second quarter. Fornelli added a free position goal with less than a minute to go in the half to trail 8-3 at the break.
- After Kaylee Gross cut the deficit in half early in the third period, the Griffons got two back to lead 10-4. Eastwood, Fornelli, and Gross each scored over the next 12 minutes to pull back within two midway through the fourth.
- With under six to play Gross found Sara Polovina for the score followed by another free position goal from Fornelli just 60 seconds later to tie the game 10-all.
- With 2:28 remaining MWSU's Sam Pruitt found cage to put the Griffons on top. Eastwood put a shot on goal in the final minutes to the Missouri Western keeper came up with the save.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jewell put 21 shots on goal and forced 21 turnovers.
- Fornelli finished with a team high seven points on five goals and two assists.
- Gross and Eastwood added two scores while Fia Lamanno caused three turnovers.
- Claire Eastwood picked up 13 saves and seven ground balls.
