Stockton Earns 700th Career Win As Jewell Sweeps Blue Tigers

LIBERTY, Mo. – After a game one victory against Lincoln University (Mo.), William Jewell went on to win the following three games in the series 8-4, 9-8, and a Sunday 4-1 victory. Jewell is 19-18 overall and has an 11-9 GLVC record.
 
Jewell's win on Sunday also represents the 700th career head coaching win for Mike Stockton. Inducted into the William Jewell Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018, Coach Stockton trails only fellow Hall of Famer Fred Flook in all-time Jewell baseball career wins at 729. 
 
Game 2 (Jewell 8, Lincoln (Mo.) 4)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell hit the scoreboard early when Evan Jilbert stole home in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Jilbert contributed to the scoreboard again in the third with an RBI double to left that scored Will McCombs. Two batters later Justin George reached on an error to score Jilbert that made it 3-0 Cardinals.
  • Lincoln took a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning that was quickly taken back by Jewell one frame later when Jewell plated four runs in the sixth off five hits for a 8-4 final.

KEY STATS
  • Chandler Ashby got the start in the second game of the series, allowing four runs on three hits in 4.1 IP. Kyle Fitzgerald picked up his second win of the year in relief, striking out four in the appearance.
  • Cardinals had five with multi-hit games, with three hits, including two doubles, and a run from Jordan Phillips.
 
 
Game 3 (Jewell 9, Lincoln (Mo.) 8)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the first with one man on, Justin George tripled to right field to score Jordan Phillips early. Two innings later an Evan Jilbert sac-fly and Phillips homer gave Jewell a 3-0 lead.
  • Lincoln (Mo.) responded with eight unanswered runs for an 8-3 lead headed into the sixth inning.
  • In the sixth, a three-run shot to left from Brayden Blundell pulled Jewell within two runs. A pair of RBI singles from Jilbert and Phillips later in the inning plated three runs ultimately winning the game for Jewell, 9-8.

KEY STATS
  • Jake Sawyer got the start going four innings, punching out two batters. Brody Grawe was award his first win of the year facing four batters. 
  • Nick Fitzanko notched save number five, tied for the second most in the GLVC, when he struck out four of the seven batters he faced.
  • Cardinal batters only struck out three times in the game.
  • Brayden Blundell's homer in the sixth is his first in a Jewell uniform.
 
Game 4 (Jewell 4, Lincoln (Mo.) 1)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In their second triple in as many games, Will McCombs scored Luke Bies for a one-run Cardinal lead in the third inning. One batter later Evan Jilbert scored McCombs for a 2-0 score.
  • Cardinals went down 1-2-3 the next two innings before Ben Click reached on a fielder's choice to score Jilbert.
  • A double to right off the bat of Jordan Phillips provided the Cardinals insurance when a late Blue Tiger run made it 4-1 as William Jewell swept the four-game series and head coach Mike Stockton won his 700th career game.

KEY STATS
  • Jacob Sullivan went the distance, a nine-inning complete game where the senior tied the NCAA-era single game strikeout record with 12. He gave up two hits and issued one walk.
  • Coach Stockton's 700th win is second most in program history behind Fred Flook (729).
 

UP NEXT
Jewell will be on the road against McKendree in a series that has been pushed up due to projected weekend weather in Illinois. The four-game series is now beginning Thursday with a double-header slated for noon.
