LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell baseball team dropped a pair of one-run contests to the University of Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon. A low scoring game one pushed past Jewell down 2-1, while an extra-inning 5-4 win for the Greyhounds capped off the day. The Cardinals drop to 20-25 on the season with a 11-16 GLVC mark.
Game 1 (Jewell 1, Indianapolis 2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams' offenses were held quiet until the fourth inning when Jordan Phillips got on base with a single up the middle and was hit home with a double from Justin George to take a 1-0 lead.
- A lead-off home run in the sixth tied it for Indianapolis, Evan Jilbert reached on an error in the home half of the inning but couldn't get past second base.
- With one man on in the top of the seventh a throwing error from the Cardinals allowed a run to score while Jewell went down in order in the bottom of the seventh for the 2-1 loss.
KEY STATS
- Chandler Ashby got the game one start, striking out three in 5.1 innings while Nick Fitzanko was tagged with the loss after striking out two of the five he faced.
- Jewell tallied only four hits while Indianapolis registered six knocks.
- The Cardinals were struck-out a combined 10 times, double as many punchouts that the Greyhound batters had.
Game 2 (Jewell 4, Indianapolis 5)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell got on the board early in game two as well when Ben Click was robbed of a grand slam in left field that became a sacrifice fly and a 1-0 Cardinal lead.
- In the third Click again put runs on the board, this time a two-run single that scored Jordan Phillips and Evan Jilbert.
- Indianapolis took the 4-3 lead in the sixth, in the bottom of the inning Jonah Sanford reached on a fielder's choice that tied the game at 4-4 when Cale Blasi scored.
- In the 11th a lead-off home run from the Greyhounds gave them all they needed as they would take down the Cardinals 5-4 in extras.
KEY STATS
- Jacob Sullivan started on the hill for Jewell, going five innings. Ryan Hunt entered the game in relief and went 4.1 innings, allowing one run and getting the Cardinals out of a two men on situation in the eighth but got the loss.
- Similarly to game one Jewell was struck out considerable more than the Greyhounds, by 11-3.
