LIBERTY, Mo. – After falling short with a late-game rally the opening game of their doubleheader versus Missouri S&T by a score of 6-5, William Jewell won the night cap with a dominant performance from
Jake Sawyer on the mound. The Cardinals sit at 15-16 on the year with a 7-8 conference mark.
Game 1 (Jewell 5, S&T 6)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Cardinals allowed two first inning runs and then scored a pair of their own when the Miners' catcher could not find a passed ball that rolled to the backstop and a subsequent wild pitch that saw both Evan Jilbert and Jordan Phillips cross home.
- In the second inning a two-run double off of the bat of Luke Bies doubled up the Cardinals' lead to 4-2.
- S&T scored four runs between the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to take a 6-4 advantage into the final seventh inning.
- A Jonah Sanford sac fly scored one run, but Jewell stranded two runners in scoring position as they fell one run short, 6-5.
KEY STATS
- Jacob Sullivan got the game one nod, going 5.2 innings allowing four runs with one strikeout. Relief pitcher Cam Lawson (1-1) received the loss, punching out four Miner batters.
- Jewell tallied only six hits, with two from both center fielder Cale Blasi and shortstop Bies.
Game 2 (Jewell 6, S&T 3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A solo homer in the second put S&T up 1-0 early but two innings later first baseman Justin George singled into left to score Evan Jilbert. While a sac-fly from Will McCombs gave the Cardinals the one run tilt.
- The fifth inning saw four runs, one from Luke Bies on a solo homer to left and three runs when four batters later George did the same with two men on giving Jewell a solid 6-2 lead.
- With the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth the Miners hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning only scoring one run.
- S&T manufactured one run in the seventh as Jewell hung on for a 6-5 win.
KEY STATS
- Jake Sawyer went the distance for his third career complete game and third win of the year.
- George led the team with four RBIs in his eighth two-hit game of the year.
- The Jewell infield turned three double plays, tied for the most in a single game within the GLVC this year.
