LIBERTY, Mo. – A pair of complete game performances from
Chandler Ashby and
Jake Sawyer gave William Jewell a split decision on Friday afternoon's doubleheader against Rockhurst. After a 5-1 game one loss, the Cardinals bounced back to the tune of a 3-1 victory. Headed into the final game of the season on Saturday Jewell is 21-28 on the year with a 12-19 conference record.
Game 1 (Jewell 1, Rockhurst 5)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Cardinals got on the board first with an RBI single from Santiago Jimenez up the middle that scored catcher Ben Click in the second inning.
- Up 1-0 in the third Jewell loaded the bases with no outs, but Rockhurst pitching and defense got the next three Jewell batters out to keep it a one-run contest.
- Rockhurst scored two runs in the fourth to take the lead, followed by three more in the seventh to put the game away 5-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Rockhurst began with a homer in the first for the quick lead, before both sides saw no more than four batters until the bottom of the third when a ground-rule double from Evan Jilbert put runners on the corners for the Cardinals.
- An RBI single to left from Jordan Phillips plated Luke Linder to tie the game at one-run each. The next batter was Jimenez who rocked a double to deep right center to give Jewell a 3-1 lead.
- Starting pitcher Jake Sawyer allowed just three hits the following innings, giving Jewell the 3-1 win over the Hawks.
