Cardinals Fall on Day One of Washburn Opener

TOPEKA, Kan. - The William Jewell volleyball team opened the Washburn Invitational on Friday afternoon, falling to Minnesota State-Moorhead by a final of 3-0 and Newman University, 3-1. The Cardinals fall to 0-6 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals fell into an early 17-8 hole and could not recover in set one, falling 25-15. 
  • Jewell got three straight points, including back-to-back kills from Emily Brannan, midway through set two but the Dragons were able to close out the set, 25-10. 
  • MSU-Moorhead recorded 18 kills in set three on a .500 attack percentage   

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Brannan and Emma Lea Benney led the Cardinals with six kills with the latter also having seven digs. 
  • The Dragons hit a blistering .483 on the match and held Jewell to .056. 

vs. NEWMAN (3-1, Loss)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell jumped on top early, leading 9-3 after four errors by the Jets. Newman went on a 12-3 run midway through set one to take a four point lead. The Cardinals knotted things up on three straight kills but the Jets won five of the final eight points.
  • Set two was back-and-forth throughout as neither team was able to hold on to a lead bigger than three. Trailing 23-22, the Cardinals got kills from Brannan and Macy Bartlett and were aided by a Newman error to take the set, 25-23. 
  • The third frame was again tightly contested as the team were deadlocked at 20-all after a block from Benney and Caroline Beckmann. The Cardinals committed three late errors that helped Newman take the set, 25-20. 
  • After three straight points gave Jewell a 17-15 lead midway through the fourth, Newman closed the match on a 10-5 run to win 25-22. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals posted a season high nine aces, led by three from Reaghan Bible who also had 11 assists and 11 digs. 
  • Brianna Witthar led the defense with 19 digs while Benney finished with nine kills, and Brannan with three blocks. 

UP NEXT
Jewell will wrap up the Washburn Invitational on Saturday, taking on Emporia State and the host Ichabods.
