Cardinal Volleyball Falls at Washburn Invitational

TOPEKA, Kan. - The William Jewell volleyball dropped a pair of matches on Saturday at the Washburn Invitational to Emporia State and the hosts No. 12 ranked Ichabods. The Cardinals drop to 0-8 on the season. 


vs. Emporia State (3-0, Loss)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After falling behind early, the Cardinals rallied with a 6-1 run, capped by kills from Emma Lea Benney and Macy Bartlett to pull within 11-10. The Hornets responded with a 14-3 run of their own to take the opener 25-13. 
  • Emporia State used a another big 13-3 run in set two take a quick two set lead, winning 25-11. 
  • The Cardinals rallied in the third set, leading 17-14 after a kill from Sarah Madsen. ESU used a quick 6-0 run late to go back in front and finished with a 25-21 win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell hit .134 on the match while the Hornets were at a .307 clip. 
  • Benney and Madsen each finished with six kills while Wylie Singleton had two aces. 
  • Olivia Starr had a team high 13 assists. 

vs. #12 Washburn (3-0, Loss)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell came out strong in first set against nationally ranked Washburn, taking an 18-17 lead after back-to-back kills by Silvia Fisher and Macy Bartlett. The Ichabods won five straight points to move back in front and took set one, 25-22. 
  • Washburn took control and won set two 25-16 and set three 25-12. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Benney paced the offense and four aces with 11 kills while Starr dished out 17 assists. 
  • Alexis Nunn had eight digs while Singleton finished with three blocks.
  • The Cardinals finished with nine aces.

Jewell returns to action next weekend at the Truman State Invite.
