Cardinal Football Takes on Southwest Baptist in GLVC Opener

THIS WEEK'S ACTION:
vs. Southwest Baptist (1-1, 0-0 GLVC)

Saturday, September 20, 2025
6:00 PM • Greene Stadium

CARDINAL NOTES
  • William Jewell is back at home this week to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play as they host the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist University. The Cardinals are looking to improve to 3-0 in back-to-back years for the first time since the 1982 and 1983 seasons.
  • The Cardinals and SBU have seen some battles over the years, with seven games decided by seven points or less. In the most recent meeting in 2024, Jewell rallied in the fourth quarter to go in front 28-27 before Derrick Von Hubbard blocked a 25-yard field goal attempt with two seconds left.
  • The defensive line has been one of the best in Division II through the first three weeks of the regular season, ranking second nationally with 5.50 sacks and fifth with more than nine tackles for loss. Von Hubbard enters the week eighth in Division II with 1.25 sacks while Parker Cummins is fifth in the GLVC at 1.00. On the other side, the Cardinals are one of just three teams nationally to not have allowed a sack.
  • In addition to take downs behind the line of scrimmage, Jewell is ninth in the country and tops in the GLVC with a +2 turnover margin having forced 10 turnovers through two games, which leads Division II. Max McKenzie and Sonny Proctor of two of 11 players in the country to recover two fumbles this season while four different players have an interception. Ben Murawski, Devin Walton and Keagan Hart each had a pick last weekend with the latter's 65-yard touchdown return, the first Jewell pick six this season.
  • After graduating one of the nation's top running backs a year ago, MicahJo Barnett is proving he is capable of filling the shoes. The sophomore enters the week atop the GLVC leader board in rushing yards at 208 and 104 per game. A local Liberty native, Barnett posted a career high 150 yards and four scores last weekend to lead the offense.
  • Tyler Kubat takes the reigns of the offense this week after going 6-for-11 for 101 yards, one touchdown and one pick in second half action against Kentucky Wesleyan. A transfer from Lindenwood University, he appeared in five games with 415 passing yards in two seasons with the Lions.
  • Three players posted double-digit tackles last weekend, led by redshirt freshman Ben Murawski's 14. The wide receiver turned defensive back picked up seven solo take downs along with an interception. A fellow Smithville, Mo. native, Caleb Donnell had 10 tackles, including six solo while Jonny Williams (Joplin, Mo.) had 13 with two for loss and one forced fumble. The trio is among the GLVC leads in tackles per game with Murawski and Williams ranking second and 13th, respectively.
  • After going a perfect 6-for-6 in his debut Bleu Renfrow missed for the first time in his young career on Saturday, although the attempt was from 55 yards, which would have broken the GLVC record. The rookie is currently leading the league and 13th nationally with an average of 40.67 net yards per punt and is second in the conference with a 66.7% clip on field goals.
