LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell football team suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday with a 29-19 loss to Southwest Baptist after the Bearcats scored 14 fourth quarter points. The Cardinals drop to 2-1 on the season and 0-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After both teams had an early three-and-out, the Cardinals took advantage of an early SBU error as
Justin Endicott recovered a fumble on the eight yard line. On the first play of the Jewell drive,
Tyler Kubat found
Beau Doughty for a quick 7-0 lead.
The Bearcats rallied late in the opening quarter, getting on the board with a safety after an errant snap over the head of the punter before taking the lead on a 38 yard touchdown pass to Avery Lambert.
After SBU extended their lead to 15-7, Kubat led a charge down field that ended in a
Cameron Emmons two yard run but the two point conversion attempt came up short as the Cardinals trailed 15-13.
Bleu Renfrow came on to connect on a 36-yard field goal as the clock expired to send Jewell to the break, leading 16-15.
Renfrow hit from 24-yards to make it 19-15 early in the third quarter but Southwest Baptist put together back-to-back scoring drives to go in front for good, 29-19.
