WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS - The William Jewell volleyball team dropped two matches on Saturday afternoon to close out the Midwestern State Invitational. The Cardinals fell 3-0 to Southeastern Oklahoma State and Oklahoma Christian to drop to 0-4 on the young season.
VS. SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA (3-0, Loss)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After falling into an early hole, the Cardinals benefited from five straight errors from Southeastern to knot things up at 12-all. Jewell got a kill from Macy Bartlett late to take a 19-18 lead but the Savage Storm won eight of the final 11 points to take the first set 25-22.
- Southeastern went on a quick 9-2 run midway through set two and finished with the final six points to take the frame, 25-16.
- In the finale, the Cardinals could not slow down the SEOK offense, falling into a 19-5 deficit. A Silvia Fisher kill slowed the run briefly but the Storm finished off the match, 25-10.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jewell struggled offensively, hitting -.033 on the match but did have 46 digs, led by Alexis Nunn's 15.
- Bartlett was tops with seven kills with Reaghan Bible finishing with nine assists.
VS. OKLAHOMA CHRISTIAN (3-0, Loss)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first set of the weekend finale went back-and-forth in the early going, until OCU used a 6-1 run to go in front 23-17. A service error and a Wylie Singleton kill pulled the Cardinals back within five but the Eagles closed it out, 25-19.
- After Oklahoma Christian broke out to a 19-11 lead, Jewell rallied, pulling back within four behind two kills and an ace from Emma Lea Benney but the Eagles were able to sneak past, 25-20.
- Another mid-set run by OCU gave them a 21-15 lead in set three. Kills from Benney and Emily Brannan pulled the Cards back within striking distance but they ran out of time, falling 25-19.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jewell hit a season high .143 in the match, led by Benney's eight kills.
- Bible dished out 14 assists with Nunn picking 14 digs while Caroline Beckmann had two blocks.
UP NEXT
Jewell heads to the Washburn Invitational next weekend, opening with Minnesota State Moorhead on Friday at 1 p.m.
