LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball kept their streak alive while facing the top ranked team in the GLVC on Thursday evening as the Cardinals winning 83-74 over Upper Iowa, who is receiving votes in the national polls. With their sixth straight win, Jewell moves to 11-7 on the season and 7-3 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After spending nearly two minutes tied at six, Isaac Patterson hit a long range three to spark the Cardinals 13-4 run. Upper Iowa followed with a 17-4 run of their own to go in front 27-23 but Jewell responded with another streak, as Ashton Jermain's bucket with under 60 seconds to play in the first half made it 41-32 in favor of the Cardinals. UIU hit a triple just before the buzzer to send the teams to the locker room with Jewell on top by six.Â
- The Cardinals opened the second half with seven straight points to take their largest lead of the day, 48-37. Upper Iowa rallied to cut the deficit to two before Jewell quickly pushed it back double-digits.
- Both teams continued to trade runs in the second half until the Peacocks made things interesting late, hitting a three to make it a one point game, 71-70. Jewell broke through the press in the final minutes, getting three easy baskets from Patterson, Kyle Scharbrough, and Bradley Lightbourne to roll to the nine point win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Justice Sutton led all players with a double-double of 30 points and 13 rebounds, tying his career high in scoring for the second time in seven days.
- Patterson finished with 19 points while Scharbrough added 12 and Lightbourne 11, to go with five assists.Â
- Jewell shot 57% from the floor and out-rebounded the Peacocks 38-30.Â
