Cardinals Win Defensive Battle over Quincy to Run Streak to Seven

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball held Quincy University to a season low 51 points on Saturday afternoon to win 63-51 and run their win streak to seven straight. The Cardinals improve to 12-7 overall and 8-3 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Quincy scored the first points of the afternoon but from there the Cardinals took control as Ashton Jermain's three pointer made it an early seven point advantage. The Hawks used an offensive rebound and put back to pull within three midway through the opening period but five straight points from Bradley Lightbourne coupled with an offensive rebound and bucket by Kyle Scharbrough quickly pushed the Jewell advantage to double digits.
  • Both teams were cold in the second half as Jewell was just 1-for-11 from three point land, while holding the Hawks to just 23% from the floor overall. Multiple stretches of scoreless action helped Quincy stay in the game, as the Cardinals did not more than a four point lead until back-to-back baskets from Justice Sutton with under nine minutes remaining, put Jewell in front by six. A Sutton steal and slam moments later expanded the lead to 10 as the Cardinals rolled during the last two minutes to their 12 victory of the year.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Sutton paced the Cardinals with 21 points and eight rebounds with Lightbourne had 14 points and Scarbrough nine.
  • Jermain added three steals and seven rebounds off the bench.
  • The Cardinals forced Quincy into 18 turnovers, leading to 17 points and scored 32 points in the paint.
