Jewell Posts Second Highest Point Total but Falls in Five

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell volleyball team scored 65 points on Friday night, their second highest total this season but dropped a heartbreaker in five sets to Quincy University. The Cardinals fall to 1-14 on the season and 0-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. 

Trailing 18-15 midway through the first set, a service error by the Hawks gave Jewell a spark as they rallied with a 9-6 run to eventually the set at 24-all after back-to-back blocks from Wylie Singleton. The Cardinals got a third block from Singleton to tie things up again at 25 but consecutive kills gave Quincy the 27-25 win. 

Jewell came out of the break with a 5-0 run and broke away to commanding 23-13, led by six kills and two aces from Macy Bartlett. Quincy rolled off three straight by back-to-back errors gave the Cards the set, 25-16. 

In set three, it was Quincy who took the early advantage, leading 7-2. Kelsey Keling led the rally as Jewell went on an 18-9 run. After a QU kill, the Cardinals finished things off in dominant fashion with five straight points, including two more kills from Keling. 

After the Hawks took set four it set a winner-take-all finale. Tied 3-all early in the fifth, Quincy went on a 9-2 run to open up a 12-5 lead. The Cardinals were able to trade points the rest of the way but fell short, 15-8.

  • In addition to the point total, the match featured Jewell's second highest marks of the season in kills (49), assists (46), aces (7), digs (73), and blocks (9). 
  • Bartlett led Jewell with 13 kills while Keling added 11 as Alexis Frazier handed out a career high 41 assists. 
  • Singleton finished with a match high seven blocks with Frazier chipping in four. 
  • Ashlynn Rowland led four players in double figures with 21 digs while Bartlett and Frazier each had 13.
