LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell baseball team opened a four-game series with Missouri-St. Louis on Thursday evening, falling 10-3 to the Tritons. Jewell is 6-22 on the year and 2-11 in the GLVC.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Down 2-0 in the second after back-to-back home runs Koen Gakstatter ripped his second homer of the year, a solo shot to right, to put the Cardinals on the board. Three batters later a Luke Bies first-pitch RBI single scored Bronson Ryan to knot the game up at 2-2.
- After a solo homer given up in the third inning, catcher Ilyas van den Bos answered with a no-doubter of his own, crushing a home run over the left field bullpen to make it 3-3 headed to the fifth.
- Jewell put runners as close as third base three separate times in the final five innings but came no further after allowing seven runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to drop game one of the series, 10-3.
KEY STATS
- Taylor Brenneman went 5.1 innings, giving up six runs, striking out a pair and not issuing a walk in the loss.
- Jewell collected 13 total hits, third most in a single game this season.
- Seven and nine hitters Gakstatter and Ryan each had three hits, while Bies and Justin George had two apiece.
