Pitching Prevails In Doubleheader Wins

LIBERTY, Mo. – William Jewell took both games on Saturday against Southwest Baptist, 5-2 and 7-3. The wins push the Cardinals to 12-32 on the year and 6-20 in the GLVC.
 
Game 1 (Jewell 5, Quincy 2)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A sac-fly from Luke Isaacs got the scoring going for Jewell, with second baseman Rui Yoshida scoring in the third. A second sac-fly in the fifth from Koen Gakstatter made it 2-0 courtesy of Matt Goldasich.
  • Up 2-1 in the sixth Justin George mashed a home run to open up the inning. Three batters later an error from the Bearcat's left fielder scored Luke Bies for a 4-1 lead.
  • Jewell tacked on an insurance run in the eighth, holding on for the 5-2 series-opening win.

KEY STATS
  • Peyton Little got the start, going six innings getting his first win after his five-strikeout showing. Ryan Hunt got his fourth save after three innings out of the bullpen.
  • Jewell out-hit the Bearcats with three Cardinals, Gakstatter, Bies, and Goldasich, all having two-hit games.
 
Game 2 (Jewell 7, Quincy 3)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals got the scoring on early again, this time it was Braden Blundell's sac fly that put Jewell on the board in the second. One inning later a Bearcat balk scored Koen Gakstatter from third, followed by a Maddox Meier sac fly to make it 3-0. 
  • Up two in the sixth inning Ilyas van den Bos grounded out with the bases loaded to score Justin George. After a wild pitch scores Luke Bies, and error on the throw to attempt to catch Hayden Post stealing second allowed for Blake Tigges to cross home plate and make it 7-2. The Cardinals allowed a homer in the top of the seventh to end the day with a 7-3 win.

KEY STATS
  • Going the distance was Taylor Brenneman, tossing all seven innings for his first Jewell complete game action. He struck out three and gave up six hits.
  • While Jewell was out-hit six-to-five, the Cardinals drew two more walks than the Bearcats.

UP NEXT
The Cardinals will finish the home portion of their season ton Saturday with a Senior Day doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m., with Senior Day being between games.
