LIBERTY, Mo. – William Jewell baseball won their first conference series of the season on Saturday splitting with Southwest Baptist on a Senior Day doubleheader, falling 8-4 in game one before coming back to win 8-1 in game two. The Cardinals head to the final weekend 13-33 on the season and 7-21 in the GLVC after the day.
Game 1 (Jewell 4, SBU 8)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After giving up a pair of runs to the Bearcats in the first two innings Santiago Jimenez blasted a two-run home run to left center that tied the game at two. The next inning Justin George hit Luke Isaacs home from first to put the Cardinals up by one, 3-2.
- Southwest Baptist re-took the lead in the fourth with a three-run inning. Koen Gakstatter blasted a homer to left to cut the deficit to one run but Jewell got no closer, falling 8-4 in game one.
KEY STATS
- Charlie Rambo received the loss going just 3.1 IP, with two K's, two walks, and three earned runs.
- Gakstatter's homer was his lone hit and his third long-ball of the year.
Game 2 (Jewell 8, SBU 1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Batters named Luke wasted no time in the first inning swinging the bat. Two batters in Luke Isaacs blasted a shot over the left field fence, followed by a Luke Bies solo-shot that hit the left field foul pole to make it 3-0.
- The home-runs continued in the third with Maddox Meier on, when Justin George said goodbye to a fastball he sent over the fence in left to make it 5-0 Jewell and later in the fourth with a solo-shot from Koen Gakstatter, his second of the day.
- Jewell plated runs in the fifth and seventh for a 8-1 lead, taking the series against the Bearcats
KEY STATS
- Ethan Veach got his first win of the year with a seven inning showing, giving up five hits, striking out four.
- Jewell's four home runs (Gakstatter, Isaacs, Bies, George) ties their single game high this season (Feb. 15 versus Arkansas Ft. Smith)
