KEARNEY, Neb. - The William Jewell volleyball team suffered a pair of 3-1 losses on Friday to open the UNK Fall Classic, hosted by the University of Nebraska Kearney. The Cardinals fall to 1-9 on the season.
Northwestern Oklahoma State 3, Jewell 1
After dropping the opener the Cardinals rallied in the second frame, coming out with a 10-3 lead following a block and kill from
Cassidy Hurst. The Rangers strung together a couple of points before the Cardinals used another 6-3 run to open up a commanding 17-9 advantage. Northwestern Oklahoma got back within four late but back-to-back kills from
Wylie Singleton and
Silvia Fisher ended things, 25-17, to knot the match at a set apiece.
The Rangers gained the early lead in set three but Jewell rallied, using a 7-3 run to tie things up at 10-all after another kill from Fisher before a
Macy Bartlett attack gave the Cards their first lead, 13-12. Late in the set,
Kelsey Keling put down consecutive kills to make it 21-19 in favor of Jewell but the Rangers closed the frame on a 7-3 run to win 26-24.
After trailing early, the Cardinals got went on a quick 4-1 run to pull back within one in set four, but Northwestern Oklahoma closed things out, winning seven of the match's final nine points.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jewell hit a season high .231, including .400 in set two, led by three players finishing with double figure kills, led by Fisher's 15.
- Alexis Frazier and Ashlynn Rowland each had career highs with the former handing out 29 assists while Rowland dug up 19 balls.
Hastings 3, Jewell 1
The Cardinals jumped out in front in their second match of the day, as a Rowland ace made it 11-6 early. After Hastings pulled back within three, Jewell used a 10-5 run to win the opening set 25-17, as Singleton and Fisher combined for two blocks in the final three points.
Set two was all Hastings early as they broke out to a 21-9 lead but the Cardinals made a push late, going on a 7-3 run, led by two kills from
Lily Waters, but it was too little too late. The two teams traded runs in set three with the Mustangs coming out on top, 25-18.
The finale was another close affair as neither team could gain more than a two point advantage until late when the Mustangs used a 5-0 run to go from down three to up two. Jewell did not go quietly as a kill from
Kali Adamec and another block by Singleton and Fisher pulled the Cardinals within one, 23-22. Back-to-back kills from Hastings' Ilse Benne ended the threat and gave the Mustangs the match.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Rowland posted her second consecutive career high match, finishing with 20 digs, to lead three in double figures. The Cardinals collected 83 digs for the match, their highest total since September 20, 2024.
- Waters led the offense with nine kills while Frazier handed out 15 assists.
- Fisher and Singleton added four blocks.

Jewell will challenge No. 7 ranked Nebraska Kearney on Saturday in their final tune-up before the start of Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
